Potential Household Poisons

In childhood, the major threats to life are principally accidents and poisonings. Very young children will touch and taste everything within easy reach.

The most common causes of poisoning in preschool children are, respectively, drugs and medicines of all kinds, poisonous plants, personal care products, household chemicals and household cleaners.

Parents should keep "Ipecac" (available without a prescription) on hand to induce vomiting in cases of household poisoning (Ipecac's shelf life is five years). It should be used only if you are directed to do so by a poison control center or by your physician.
