Below is a teaching idea on beginner
reading for toddler. It involves an introduction to phonics learning
through matching sounds with pictures.
Learning Materials
* Look for a picture of the following and
cut them up. Paste them individually on cardboards:
* Letters “A” to “E” (capital letters) and pictures of apple, ball,
cup, dog, egg.
(You can slowly add your letters until “Z” to make a full set)
Collect as many pictures for each letter as possible. Make sure that
the names have the sounds you want to teach. For example, “bug” “boat”
and “bell” for “B”.
Use sandpaper to cut the shape of each letter out.
Learning Objectives
* To familiarize the child with the
sounds of the words using pictures.
* To make reading activities fun.
* To increase the child’s vocabulary.
How to Play and Teach the Toddler
1. Let your child feel (that you cut out
using sandpaper) the letter while you say their respective sound.
2. Next, let your child trace a letter with his fingers, saying the
sound, then pick out the picture(s) that go with that sound.
3. Each time a new picture is taken out, tell him to feel the letter
again, to say the sound and then name the picture.
4. Repeat the exercise for all alphabets.
