Below are activity ideas on sensorial and
texture learning for your toddler :
Sensorial Learning
Collect a variety of cloth or fabrics
with different textures and weight. Cut them into squares of 6 inch (15
cm). You can use silk, cotton, satin, muslin, corduroy, terry cloth and
etc. Make pairs for each type of cloth.
How to play with your child while teaching him
1. Give your child three pairs of cloth. These pairs have the greatest
contrast in texture.
2. Mix them and ask him to pair them by feeling them between his
fingers. When he understands the procedure, add more fabrics.
3. Make it fun by getting your child to close his eyes and match them
by feeling and weighing them, one on each hand.
Learning Textures
Children have touched and felt various
textures. They now need to learn the names of the textures, using rough
and smooth board. Below is one of the many suggested teaching
activities. The objective is to help the toddler to learn the names
“rough” and “smooth”.
Materials Requirement
Get a 12 inch (30cm) x 6 inch (15 cm) hard tack board or wooden piece.
Cut up a piece of sandpaper that is half the size of the board and a
similar size piece of glossy paper. Stick both pieces on the board and
leave it to dry. Make sure the two pieces are completely glued to the
board before using.
How to play with your toddler while teaching him
1. Show the board to your child.
2. Show him how to feel the board. Touch the paper lightly on the
fingertips and lift the hand away quickly.
3. Introduce and say “rough” on the sandpaper piece and fell it.
Continue with the word “smooth”.
4. Ask the child, “Which one is rough?” followed by “Feel it”. Next
ask, “ Which one is smooth?”
5. Point to the sandpaper piece and ask “What is this?” followed by the
smooth board.
You can continue to make different grades of rough pieces and name them
rough, rougher and roughest. Another variation, of course, would be
smooth, smoother and smoothest.
