Puzzle game is great for children between
2 to 6 years. Working on puzzles help children develop visual
discrimination. The early puzzles fun for toddlers should be a
one-to-one activity. Before you let your child work independently with
a new set of puzzles, show him how to match according to the colors,
shapes and size to find the missing piece.
Before long, your toddlers would be able to identify the piece that
fits perfectly into the right place. When he is able to compare and
sort, he will work with more pieces. The puzzles fun doubles when he
starts working with puzzles ranging from 2-dimensional to
3-dimensional.
Homemade Puzzles
While kid’s puzzles are readily available
from toy shops, parents could also try out making home-made puzzles to
further enhance the puzzles fun for their loved one. Below are 2 ideas.
1. Pick a large photo of an animal or you can use a big
postcard. Paste this onto a cardboard. Cut into several pieces and get
him to fix the photo back together.
2. Mystery Bag
Materials Needed
A string bag
Small household items (small enough to fit into the bag) that your
child is familiar with
A handkerchief to blindfold
Learning Objectives
* To help child use his sense of touch to familiarize with various
objects.
* To work with tactile sense.
How to Play and Teach the Toddlers
1. Get him to close his eyes.
2. Let him put his hand into the bag and take out an object.
3. Before he removes it from the bag, ask him to identify the object.
4. You can change the items in the bag.
5. You can place items in the bag that have names beginning with
specific letters, for example, “b” - a small ball, toy boat, building
blocks, book, band-aid, button, toy bus and so on.
6. Make sure the items in the bag are safe and have no sharp edges.
