Fingerless glove (fine
motor, 0-3 months)
* Cut the fingertips off an old glove and
attach different textured materials (Flannel, silk, velvet, and linen
all work well) near the cut edge. NOTE: Securely attach all materials.
* You can try with attaching a large button or similar large object of
the different texture too.
* Wear the glove and touch your baby each time with a different
texture, tell him if that is “soft, rough, cold, furry, smooth” each
time.
Rattles (fine motor, 0-3 months)
* This game is played when your baby is
alert.
* Place a rattle in your baby’s hand. He may only hold it for a few
seconds before dropping it. Pick up the rattle and give it to him
again.
* Soon you will realize that he will bring the rattle to his mouth.
This is a normal developmental milestone where any object placed in a
baby’s hand becomes something for the mouth.
Green green grass (fine motor, 0-3 months)
* Pick a mild day and go outside of the
house. Spread a blanket on the grass and sit on it with your baby.
* Pick a blade of grass and stroke gently on your baby’s arm.
* Place your baby’s hand on the grass and let him stroke the grass
gently. Move his hand back and forth across it.
* Your baby will try to grasp the grass and find this activity fun.
Hold it (fine motor, 0-3 months)
* Hold a small toy in front of your baby
where he can see. Touch the inside of his hand with the toy and help
him close his fingers around it.
* Take your hand away, leaving him holding the toy.
* If he drops the toy, give it to him again and speak to him in an
encouraging tone.
* Alternate with the other hands each time.
* As you play this game, your baby’s fingers will grow stronger and
soon he will be able to open and close his hands voluntarily.
* Add in tactile experiences by using toys that are soft, hard, cool,
smooth and so on.
