Pick Up Fun (fine motor,
3-6 months)
* When your baby is old enough to sit
comfortably in his high chair, you can try giving him small bits of
food to pick up.
* Dry cereal will help to develop his dexterity.
* Put some dry cereal on his high chair and show him hoe to pick one up
and put it down again. (Don’t be upset if he picks it up but refuse to
put it down, this is the hard part)
* Show him also how to pick up a piece of dry cereal and transfer it to
the other hand.
* Hold out your hand with palm up, watch if he can pick up a piece of
dry cereal and place it into your hand.
Fingers and Toes (fine motor, 3-6 months)
* Babies love to play with their fingers
and toes.
* Stroke each of your baby’s finger and say “Finger, finger, finger”
* Then stroke each of his toe and say “Toe, toe, toe”
* Tap his fingers on his toes and say “Fingers on toes, fingers no
toes”
* Soon, your baby will learn to tap his fingers on his toes.
* Another variation is to tap one finger on one toe and say “One finger
on one toe”, then go one with two fingers and two toes and so on. This
will help them to develop their sense of co-ordination.
What’s In There? (fine motor, 3-6 months)
* Prepare a box (shoe box is ideal) and
punch two finger holes into it.
* Line the box with materials of different textures, for example, fur,
velvet or sandpaper. Tape the box closed.
* Show your baby how to poke a finger through a hole. Let him poke his
into one hole and yours into the other.
* Tell him how the materials feel; are they smooth, soft, rough or
bumpy?
* You can play this while traveling in a car or plane.
