Where did it go?
(cognitive skills, 9-12 months)
* This game helps your baby learn object
persistence, i.e. an object still exists even if it’s out of his sight.
* Sit with your baby on the floor and who him a favorite toy.
* Let him play with the toy for a few minutes and ask if you may have
your turn.
* If he agrees, take the toy and cover it with a cloth.
* Ask him to find the toy.
* If he does not understand at first, retrieve the toy and try the game
again.
* Repeat several times until he is able to retrieve it without help.
* You can repeat the game with a different toy or object.
I can see the ribbon (cognitive skills, 9-12
months)
* Pick one of your baby’s favorite toy
and tie a short piece of ribbon around it.
* Show him how to pull the ribbon to get the toy.
* Now, try hiding this toy and leave the ribbon showing. Ask him where
the toy is and show him how to pull the ribbon to get the toy.
* He will love doing this and laugh with enthusiasm.
Stacking game (cognitive skills, 9-12 months)
* Learning about sizes is a hands-on
experience for babies. Trying to fit one object into another is the way
babies learn about big and small. This happens even before they know
the words “big” and “small”.
* You don’t need to buy expensive stacking toys for your baby.
* Graduated measuring cups that you use for baking are excellent toys
to use in teaching your baby sizes.
* First, give your baby two cups, show him how to put one inside the
other. Then let him try himself.
* When he figures out how to do this, give him a third cup.
* Praise him when he fits one into the other.
Building tall tower (cognitive skills, 9-12
months)
* Again, you don’t need expensive
building blocks for your baby to learn about balance and stacking.
* Save containers of various sizes you use in your kitchen, such as
cereal boxes, margarine containers, milk cartons, juice cans and so on.
Make sure that these containers are clean and dry and they do not have
sharp edges.
* Let your baby experiment with stacking the containers. He will learn
about balance.
* Build a tower with your baby using the containers. When it topples
over, laugh with him so he understands that it’s alright for it to fall
down.
* You can also help him to build a tunnel and show him how to push a
toy car through the tunnel.
