Floating fun (vision,
9-12 months)
* Wrap a floating bath toy in a little
handkerchief and move it around the bath tub.
* Give it to your baby and see if he can unwrap it. Praise him if he
manages to unwrap it. If he can’t, help him to unwrap it.
* After unwrapping, squeeze the water from the handkerchief over the
toy.
* Get your baby to try to squeeze the handkerchief over the toy.
* As the water is dripping, say “yeeee!”
* This game requires hand-eye coordination.
Catch me (vision, 9-12 months)
* Babies love to play with water.
* Give a ladle, a strainer and a container to your baby.
* Show him how to scoop water with a ladle and pour it into the
container.
* Let him try with a strainer next to experience the difference between
a strainer and a ladle.
* This is good for hand-eye coordination.
Now you see it, now you don’t (vision, 9-12
months)
* Prepare three clear plastic cups and
some cereal.
* Sit your baby in the high chair and while he watches, hide a cereal
under one of the cups.
* Let the baby lift the cup up and eat the cereal.
* Next, add a second cup. Repeat the game, each time; you must make
sure that he is watching where you hide the cereal.
* You can add a third cup if your baby finds this interesting.
* Each time he finds the cereal, praise him.
Sliding toy cars (vision, 9-12 months)
* Fold a large piece of cardboard in
half. Stand the cardboard up to make a hill. You may need to secure
both edges that come into contact with the floor so that it makes a
‘secure’ hill.
* Get some toy cars and show your baby how to let each car roll down
the cardboard hill.
* Hold a car in your hand and say “one, two, get set and go!” let the
car go down the hill.
* See if he can learn to wait for the word “go” before he releases the
car.
* For older baby, you can even have a ‘competition’ where you roll one
car and he rolls the other at the same time. See whose car reaches the
bottom first. The baby will have to be able to release the car on
hearing “go” before he can be in this ‘competition’.
