Which Hand? (vision, 6-9
months)
* Close your hand around a small,
interesting object. Open your hand to show your baby the object and
close your hand again.
* Ask him “Where is the (name of the object)?” then open your hand
again to show him the object.
* Use your other hand and repeat the process.
* Soon, you will notice that your baby starts to grab your hand trying
to open up your hand to take the object from you.
* This game helps the babies to understand object persistence (i.e.
objects placed inside containers do not disappear).
Drop It! (visual, 6-9 months)
* Prepare a small empty container (small
coffee cans are good). Make sure the can has no sharp edges.
* Sit your baby on the floor and place the empty can in front of him.
* Place a small ball or object in his hand and hold it over the can,
open his fingers to let the object drop into the can.
* When the object hit the bottom of the can, say “bang”.
* Repeat this several times and soon your baby will drop the object all
by himself.
* You may need to help him retrieve the object.
* Using objects that make different sounds when dropped can be exciting
for your baby.
Floating Game (visual, 6-9 months)
* Sit on the floor with your baby.
* Prepare some light napkins, scarves, diapers, small piece of cloth,
or even disposable kitchen towel and other soft materials that will
float in the air.
* Throw the first item into the air (kitchen towel is good to begin
with). As it floats back down, extend your arm to catch it.
* Repeat this and tell your baby to catch it. Help him by holding his
arms out so that the kitchen towel falls into his arms.
* Continue to play with different items and soon he will be able to
catch it himself, don’t forget to praise him if he does.
