Who are they? (language
skills, 6-9 months)
* Make good use of the diaper changing
time to create a wonderful opportunity to share special time with your
baby.
* Put your family members’ picture on the walls near the changing table
so that he can look at them when you change his diaper.
* When he looks at the picture, ask him “who do you see? And name the
person in the picture while pointing at the picture.
* Alternative: you can hand pictures of animals and ask your baby the
name of the animal and what sound it makes.
Animals creeping (language skills, 6-9 months)
* Creep your fingers up your baby’s arm
or thigh as you recite this verse:
Creeping, creeping, creeping
Comes the little dog
Woof, woof, woof, woof
And up he goes.
* Repeat the verse using another animal and its characteristic sound,
for example, a cat meows, a duck quacks, a horse neighs and a pig oinks
and so on.
* Encourage your baby to make the animal’s sound himself.
About shapes (language skills, 6-9 months)
* Sit your baby facing you on your lap.
* Take one of his hands and draw circle in the air. Then, take his
other hand and do the same.
* As you are drawing circles with him in the air, say the words
“circle, circle, and circle”
* Now, move both hands in circular motions at the same time.
* Make circles high in the air, sideways, down low and so on. Make big
circles (and say “big circle, big circle”) and small circles (and say
“small circle, small circle”).
Ball, car and block (language skills, 6-9 months)
* Sit your baby on the floor.
* Pick out three of his favorite toys that have one-word names, for
example, a ball, a car and a block.
* Pick up the ball and say “ball”.
* Pick up the car and say “car”.
* Pick up the block and say “block”.
* Ask him to pick up the ball, next, ask him to pick up the car and
then the block.
* You may have to repeat this few times before he associates the words
with the objects.
The boom boom game (language skills, 6-9 months)
* Babies are very observant, when you
repeat the same word many times and say a new word, he will pay
attention to that new word. This is called “shaping”.
* Sit your baby on your lap and bounce your baby up and down on your
knees. Say “boom, boom” as you are bouncing him.
* Say the words several times and then say a different word, for
example “boom, boom, boom, boom, happy”.
* Repeat this for a few times until he is familiar with the new word.
* Now, use the word “happy” in several sentences, for example “(baby’s
name) is a happy baby”, “look at mummy’s happy face” and so on.
* Your baby will become familiar with the word “happy” and will
recognize it when he hears it.
* The more words that you say to your baby, the more words he will
learn and understand.
My story (language skills, 6-9 months)
* Your baby will love hearing his name in
a story. Find books or magazines that have pictures of babies in them.
You can even use your baby’s photos.
* Point to the picture of a baby (or a photo of him) and call the baby
by the same name as your baby.
* Make up a story using his name. An example would be:
Once upon a time, there was a little baby boy named (your baby’s name).
(Your baby’s name) is a good boy. (Your baby’s name) could touch his
nose.
* Then ask him “can you touch your nose?”
* Continue the story: (Your baby’s name) can clap his hands. Then ask
him “can you clap your hands too?”
* Let the story last as long as he will pay attention. Praise him each
time when he follows the instruction correctly.
