Unwrap my presents (fine
motor, 9-12 months)
* Wrap three or four small toys each in
recycle paper or aluminum foil. (You can use present paper of course).
* Show your baby one of the wrapped toys.
* Talk to him about the shape and size of it and ask him “what do you
think is inside?”
* Give him the wrapped toy and encourage him to unwrap it.
* He will be delighted to tear the paper (that is why present paper is
not such a good idea, it’s a waste) to unwrap the toy.
Through the hole (fine motor, 9-12 months)
* Make a circle with your thumb and index
finger.
* Point one finger on your other hand and put it through the circle,
wiggle the finger and say “shoooo”
* On “shoooo”, point your finger through the circle and shake it or
wiggle it.
* Now, let your baby play the game and push his finger through the
circle. When you say “shoooo”, kiss the baby’s finger.
* Try to teach your baby how to make the circle with his thumb and
index finger. Put your finger through the circle he made.
Pouring game (fine motor, 9-12 months)
* Place some paper clips in a paper cup.
* Prepare another empty paper cup.
* Show your baby how to pour the paper clips from one cup to another.
* Let him try pouring himself. Your baby may spend a lot of time doing
this activity until he gets it right. He will enjoy this simple game.
(Make sure that he is under supervision and does not put the paper
clips into his mouth)
Pouring water (fine motor, 9-12 months)
* Now, let your baby learn how to pour
water.
* This game is going to fascinate all babies when they play it.
* Give your baby a shallow plastic bowl and a large spoon.
* Fill the bowl with some water.
* Next, put an empty cup next to the bowl. Show him how to scoop water
from the bowl using the spoon, and then transferring the water to the
cup.
* You may add pieces of ice cubes to make it even more interesting.
Tunnel game (fine motor, 9-12 months)
* Cut off two opposite sides of a large
cardboard box and make it into a tunnel.
* Encourage your baby to crawl through the tunnel.
* Position a toy at one end of the box and your baby at the other end.
Encourage him to go after the toy. After he has done this, he’ll do it
over and over again.
* To make this even more exciting for the bigger baby, use more boxes
(of the same size) to create a longer tunnel. You may even cut wedges
to make it a curve tunnel.
Disappearing car (fine motor, 9-12 months)
* Prepare a kitchen paper towel roll (You
can use toilet roll as well but it may be too short and ‘less exciting’
for the baby) as the ‘tube’ for this game.
* Tie a length of string (must be longer than the length of the kitchen
paper towel roll) to a small car that will fit through the tube.
Note: use toys that are too large for the baby to swallow.
* Lower the toy into the tube, then pull it out again from where you
put it in.
* Lower the toy into the tube again, but hold the string so that it
stays inside the tube for a while. Ask your baby “where is the car?”
* Tip it out from the other end of the tube. Your baby will be
delighted with this ‘mystery’ game.
* You can add fun to this game by saying “bye bye car” when you lower
it into the tube and “hello, car” when it reappears from the other end.
