Games to Enhance Fine Motor Development

Two Hands and Three Blocks (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* This game will help to teach your baby the hand release skills, part of a very important development.
* Sit your baby in his high chair or on the floor if he is old enough to sit on his own.
* Place two blocks in front of him, try to get him to pick up both blocks. If he doesn’t, put them in his hands.
* Give him a third block and he will soon learn to drop one block so that he can pick up another.

Drinking Cup (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Sit your baby in his high chair or in front of a flat surface that she can reach.
* Place a small unbreakable cup (plastic or paper cup) in front of him.
* Pick up the cup and pretend to drink from it, say words like “yummy yummy” or “good good” with a delightful expression.
* Hold the cup to his mouth and sat the same words as he pretends to drink.
* Place the cup in front of him and see whether he will play the game himself.

My Cracker (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Break small pieces out from a cracker and put it in front of your baby. Pick up one piece to eat. Encourage your baby to do the same.
* Then, drop a small piece of cracker into the bottom of a paper cup. Turn it upside down and pour the cracker out. Pick it up and eat it.
* Again, drop another piece of cracker into the paper cup and see if he will pour it out himself.

Feel Good Walk (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Hold your baby in your arms and take a ‘texture’ trip through the house.
* Let your baby feel the objects as you name their texture.
* Find and describe objects that are rough, smooth, soft, hard, prickly, silky, bumpy and cool.
* Some examples are:
Walls – rough
Glass – smooth
Cushion – soft
Floor – hard
Satin – silky
Refrigerator - cool

Napkin Peek-A-Boo (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Sit the baby on your lap facing you.
* Put a napkin or big handkerchief on your head, partially covering your face.
* Take the napkin off and say “peek-a-boo, (baby’s name)”
* Do this several times before you try it on your baby.
* Put the napkin on his head and pull it off, say “peek-a-boo, mummy (or daddy)”
* Put the napkin on his head and watch if he will pull it off himself. Keep helping him to pull it off until he learns to do it himself.
* Babies adore this game and they will play it for long periods.

Tug-of-War (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Sit your baby facing you.
* Give him one end of a long sock while you grasp the other end.
* Gently pull the sock towards you.
* Guide your baby to pull the end towards himself.
* To make this fun, you can pretend that he is so strong and he pulls you over.

Pots and Pans (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Babies like to stir in pots and pans. Give him a wooden spoon and show him how to stir. This takes a lot of hand-eye coordination.
* Next, show your baby how to put a lid on a pot. After he has learnt to put the lid on without any problem, add a second lid of a different size.
* See if he can work out which lid to put on the pot.

Fast Food Fun (fine motor, 6-9 months)

* Make your visit to the fast-food restaurant a wonderful learning experience. Your baby will encounter new sights and sounds at a restaurant.
* You can make simple toys for him to play with.
* Take the lids from several drinking cups and put them onto one straw, leaving spaces between each lid.
* Show him how to take the lids off and put them on again. Let him try it by himself.
* You can also show him that you can roll this new toy on the table.
