The Spoon (hearing, 6-9
months)
* Babies love to bang spoons on surfaces
or against another spoon.
* Give your baby a wooden spoon and demonstrate to him how to hit it on
different surfaces (for example, table, floor, aluminum can and so on)
to create different sounds.
* Then, give him a metal spoon and show him how to bang on those
different surfaces again. You can give him another metal spoon to bang
the two spoons together.
* Ask him “can you make the spoons go bang?” and if he does it, praise
him.
Paper Game (hearing, 6-9 months)
* Prepare various kinds of paper, for
example, wrapping paper, aluminum foil, tissue paper, sand paper,
plastic paper and so on.
* Crumple a piece of paper in your hand. Give him the same kind of
paper and help him to crumple it in his hand.
* Then, take another different kind of paper and crumple it again in
your hand. Give the same kind of paper to him and let him crumple it
too.
* Your baby will enjoy the various crumpling sounds he made.
Song Cues (hearing, 6-9 months)
* Pick three songs that you and your baby
enjoy singing together, for example “Brahm’s lullaby”, “old MacDonald
had a farm” and “Do Re Mi”.
* Try to associate each song with one of your baby’s regular
activities. For example, singing “Brahm’s lullaby” each night when it’s
time to get the baby ready for bed.
* Choose a different song for when it’s time to take a bath or it’s
meal time.
* Your baby will soon learn that each time he hears a certain song, he
will anticipate what activity is coming next.
* Routines and rituals are reassuring to babies. They help babies learn
what to anticipate and how to understand his surroundings.
